Diabetes Awareness Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2020, there are over 4.2 million Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 88 million with pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition characterized by slightly elevated blood glucose levels, indicating that a person is at risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. Texas has one of the highest rates of diabetes, and Harris county is leading the state in diabetes diagnosis.

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) is an autoimmune response causing the body to attack the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of insulin. The vast majority of individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Symptoms of diabetes can include tiredness, frequent urination, blurry vision, unexplained weight loss, and thirst.
