On Houston Public Media’s “Houston Matters” program on Monday, Dr. Charlene Flash highlighted Avenue 360’s partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Health Department to provide COVID-19 testing in southcentral Houston, an underserved part of the city. The number of tests at this site now stands at about 100 per day with positivity rate of 20 to 25%.

On school re-openings, she said the issue is “challenging.”

“I’m a mom of 3, so my husband and I are wrestling with this right now,” she said.

She noted that children learn differently — some are fine with virtual learning, others aren’t—and some kids have chronic health conditions, like asthma, that must be considered. But whatever school districts ultimately decide, she said, it should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. Schools also must guard against exacerbating economic disparities.
