National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a great opportunity to learn more about a variety of foods, and help develop a healthy lifestyle, especially for children.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem for our nation and of particular concern in Houston. A study conducted by the Houston Independent School District (HISD) found that obesity in high schoolers is above the normal range  (Houston 20.4% vs. U.S. 14.9%). Extra pounds can lead to poor self-esteem and depression, and long-term health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and an increased risk of certain cancers.

Improving the eating and exercise habits of the entire family can help protect a child’s health now and in the future. Follow the recommendations below.
