Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.<\/p>\n
Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:<\/p>\n
Mental health problems are common but\u00a0help is available. People with mental health problems can get better and many\u00a0recover\u00a0completely.<\/p>\n

Experts say we all have the potential to develop mental health problems, no matter how old we are, whether we are male or female, rich or poor, or which ethnic group we belong to.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Almost\u00a01 in 5 Americans\u00a0experiences mental health problems each year (18.5 percent). In the United States, in 2015, an estimated\u00a09.8 million adults\u00a0(over 18) had a serious mental disorder. That equates to 4.8 percent of all American adults.<\/p>\n
A large proportion of the people who have a mental disorder have more than one.<\/p>\n
In the U.S. and much of the developed world, mental disorders are\u00a0one of the leading causes\u00a0of disability.<\/p>\n

The most common types of mental illness are\u00a0anxiety\u00a0disorders, mood disorders, and\u00a0schizophrenia disorders; below we explain each in turn:<\/p>\n
